Source Date Title Summary
INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective26/08/2004Journalism InternshipINFO Nepal is a non-governmental organisation that works for the people of Nepal. INFO Nepal aims to teach English and improve life for the people of Nepal. This is achieved through the help of volunteers who come to Nepal to work, teach and live in the villages of the surrounding countryside. The organisation is based in Kathmandu but provides assistance in most regions of Nepal.

Village life is relatively primitive by western standards, but the differences made by INFO's presence in these villages are quite extraordinary. People's hopes and opportunities are greatly improved by their contact with INFO Nepal and its volunteers. Hygiene, sanitation, conservation, linguistics, work skills, cultural awareness and a greater self-confidence are many of the facets of INFO Nepal's important work. These facets are seeds that grow to improve the vitality of Nepali life.

INFO Nepal recognises the benefits that it can reap from the involvement of journalists worldwide. INFO Nepal wants to 'spread the word'. Thus, we would like to invite any interested journalists to come to Nepal for a week to see and experience at first hand what its (INFO) aims and achievements are in Nepali life and then return to inform their communities or countries of INFO Nepal's achievements.

We hope that you or your organisation can meet the flight expenses, perhaps through sponsorship, and INFO Nepal will cover all other associated costs upon arrival. (e.g., accommodation, food, transportation etc)

What distinguishes INFO Nepal from other NGOs is that the work is done hands on and selflessly by the volunteers and is facilitated with courtesy and professionalism by their mother organisation (INFO).

INFO Nepal is sensitive to the challenges met by volunteers and seeks to aid them in their endeavours with a spirit of companionship and optimism.
Asim, Bicky and Rabyn eagerly await any and all expressions of interest.
23/08/2004Cheap Volunteering Website! If you like working with children and you don't have a lot of ready cash, then this website is the place to check out. Volunteers are placed in orphanages and schools in Africa, Philippines and Brazil deoending on language skills and interest. You only pay the cost of your food and basic accommodation - $250 for under a month and $100 each month extra. One of the cheapest websites I have found!
INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective20/08/2004Teaching Environmental AwarenessIn this program, volunteers either work at a local environmental post providing program assistance or, volunteers can work with the local community to develop their own specific environmental program. Often, this program involves addressing basic health issues as well
INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective [www.infonepal.org]20/08/2004Health Post & Sanitation IssuesINFO Nepal's health post program provides a wide variety of experiences depending on the time of year, the local post's current programs, the volunteer's previous medical experience, and the volunteer's ability to learn Nepali.
INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective [www.infonepal.org]20/08/2004Resource Center & English Language ProgramINFO Nepal's Chitwan Resource Centers in Patihani, Chitwan and Nawalparasi offers English language instruction to youth and adults in the community. Some resource centers also offer opportunities to teach computer literacy. The primary purpose of the Center is to offer community youth the opportunity to develop their English language skills and to give the youths a beneficial way of spending their time rather than taking up drinking, smoking or gambling. Ultimately, the philosophy is that improved language skills will lead to employment, particularly in the Chitwan tourist areas.
INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective [www.infonepal.org]20/08/2004Homestay/Cultural Exchange & Language Training programHomestays and cultural exchange programmes can be arranged in most areas of Nepal with our 55 Hostfamilies. Participants will be placed with a Nepali family in a small rural village for the duration of their stay. This provides the volunteers with an excellent opportunity to learn about all aspects of Nepali culture, lifestyle, language, food and people. Volunteers should remember that this is a cultural exchange and that an effort to offer some knowledge of their own home culture and customs to the family with whom they stay is appreciated. During their stay, volunteers will attend 2 hours of language lessons in the morning and in the afternoon. They will also have the opportunity to visit and help out at the local school. Homestay programmes are best organised from August to December which is the time when most large local festivals take place. This makes for an overall more exciting experience for the volunteer. Nepali culture is distinctively friendly and open and participants are made to feel as though they are part of the family.

INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective [www.infonepal.org]20/08/2004Volunteer in an orphange/childrens homeVolunteers will be placed in an orphanage where they will live with the children, assisting them in their day to day routine. The children are mostly between the ages of four and fifteen, and have a basic understanding of English. The general role of the volunteer will be to act as an older sibling: to care for, look after and encourage the children. Volunteers will teach the children general life skills, including health and sanitation, as well as arts, crafts and music. They may also help the children with their school work.
Hands for Help Nepal19/08/2004Sanitation & Health CareThis Program places volunteers in health posts, sub health posts and health clinics. You work in either an urban or rural setting, providing primary care to locals in your specialty. Moreover, if you have doubts about whether your skills and talents are really needed in this part of the world, consider this: The doctor-patient ratio in Nepal is about 1 to 36,000. Particularly in rural areas, where much of the local people live, there is a desperate, chronic shortage of medical personnel and supplies. Medical school students' activities will include things like following doctors on their rounds, exploring different treatments for simple ailments, providing physical therapy, and participating in vaccination programs. Of all of our programs, we are perhaps most proud of the Medical Volunteer Program and the invaluable contributions of independent-minded professionals like you. You will help to relieve the suffering of others, playing a critical role in the villages and towns where you'll serve.

Hands for Help Nepal19/08/2004Unique Family Stay ProgramWe help volunteers who want to come Nepal for the cultural experience of a lifetime. The duration of the program depends on you. Stays are limited to no more than 4 months. You stay with host families. Through the Home Stay/Cross Cultural programs, you may both live and work with them on farms. During your stay, you will experience the unique culture, language, and traditions of the native people. You will visit the local village and will go to the local school during the day. The home stay program is a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about the Nepali culture, lifestyle, language, and people. During this period volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in local festivals and get the opportunity to exchange their culture.

For further information, please email to:

P.S.: The children who are accompanied by adults are also encouraged to take part in this unique opportunity.

Hands for Help Nepal19/08/2004Volunteer Teacher Trainer. The volunteer teacher trainer will be providing training to the English language teacher in different parts of Nepal to enhance the capabilities of the teacher and to enable the students to get quality education.

Hands for Help Nepal19/08/2004Working in an Orphanage.Orphanages are sadly a fact of life in Nepal. The high mortality rate for mothers during childbirth, as well as the short life expectancy in general, leaves thousands of children without parents each year. Orphanages provide these kids with daily meals, a bed, and some hope.

Depending on your own skills and interests, though, you can also teach songs, music, dance, cooking, or any number of activities, and generally just spend quality time with the children.
It's OK to bring gifts, but if you do please make sure you have enough for everyone. As a volunteer you will stay with a local host family and work at the orphanage during the day/evening.

Living with a remote Nepali family at first is a bit scary because you are being force into a totally different culture, as anyone would go through a bit of a shock. These feelings quickly melt as your host family looses the 'host' title, and just becomes your family. To them, you are their son or daughter, brother or sister, and taken into the family like you have lived with them forever.

INFO Nepal - Global Volunteer Perspective [www.infonepal.org]05/08/2004Teaching English at Children's LibraryTeaching English and volunteering while traveling really sets you apart from the regular traveling tourist, and makes your time so much more valued and treasured. Actually doing something special and making a difference with my time is something I will never forget. I had my four different classes to teach in a day, each which held their own characteristics and memories. I had my two different beginner level classes, split on ability and English language development, all set between seven and eleven years old. Further I had my advanced class of fourteen to sixteen year olds who already had rather good speaking English, but needed more refinement of grammar and detailed things. Then to conclude the day, at night I would teach private lessons to my older brother and his friends who were determined with their English.
